Synopsis
Two Fates

It’s the classic tale of Punjabi boy-meets-Tamilian girl, they fall in love, the families oppose it, but love conquers all and they get married to live happily ever after. Or do they? There’s a twist in this hilarious tale by Judy Balan when, four years down the line, Rishab and Deepika fall out of love. But if getting married was hard, getting divorced is much, much harder because, by now, their families have fallen in love – with each other. Andwill leave no stone unturned to make sure that what the Fates have joined together, no couple shall put asunder, even if it means staying together themselves as one big, inter-community family.

More about Rishab and Deepika, the main players in this Two States marriage for whom Fate has other plans:

Rishab : He’s just another IITian who wants to end his lucrative corporate career to become a best-selling novelist.

Deepika : She’s of the general opinion that the literary world would be a better place if the IITians restricted themselves to swivelling in corporate chairs and left the actual writing to the writers.

Rishab : He’s spontaneous.
Deepika : She schedules sex.
Rishab : He’s Punjabi.
Deepika : She’s Tamilian.
Rishab : He’s polite.
Deepika : She doesn’t have a filter.

Indiaplaza Editorial Review

Two Fates , December 29, 2011

American humourist Jean Kerr once said “ A lawyer is never entirely comfortable with a friendly divorce; anymore than a mortician wants to finish up his job and then have the patient sit up on the table ” !

Such is the premise of Judy Balan’s debut novel “ Two Fates- The Story of my Divorce ”

While the story is not about her divorce, it is about Rishab and Deepika and their hare-brained mishap of an adventure , whilst navigating through whirlpool waters of the stereotypical Punjabi and Tamil families, each hoisting a sail for the other while our two captains just want to abandon ship.
They want a divorce, but just when their families are falling in love!

The couple appear to be in a ‘friends with benefits-but married scenario’ ; are then bundled off to Scotland by the crude and obnoxious ‘Reshu Periamma’. who unfailingly refers to their conjugal bliss or the lack of it- due to their DINK ( double income no kids ) status; and apparently the office style diva ( read bitch) knows more about her failing marriage than her own best friends that are described as ‘sincere and genuine’

The story’s gripping pace, hilarious twists and irresistible characters lend the book… whoa! I seem to be indulging in a bit of fiction myself.

Lack of originality screams through almost every word and the similarity to yet another two states marriage, not to mention its constant reference to the same, reads like a drone.
The author’s attempt at hilarity potrayed either script or plot or personality detail are desultory at best.

Boring bollywood –style kitsch.

A lazy read if you have absolutely nothing else better to do.
