Shantaram

In 1978, gifted student and writer Greg Roberts turned to heroin when his marriage collapsed, feeding his addiction with a string of robberies. Caught and convicted, he was given a nineteen-year sentence. After two years, he escaped from a maximum-security prison, spending the next ten years on the run as Australia's most wanted man.

Hiding in Bombay, he established a medical clinic for slum-dwellers, worked in the Bollywood film industry and served time in the notorious Arthur Road prison. He was recruited by one of the most charismatic branches of the Bombay mafia for whom he worked as a forger, counterfeiter, and smuggler, and fought alongside a unit of mujaheddin guerrilla fighters in Afghanistan. His debut novel, SHANTARAM, is based on this ten-year period of his life in Bombay.

The result is an epic tale of slums and five-star hotels, romantic love and prison torture, mafia gang wars and Bollywood films. A gripping adventure story, SHANTARAM is also a superbly written meditation on good and evil and an authentic evocation of Bombay life

Fast paced and well narrated, talks about everything a person goes through in India undercover. It is a story of dangerous undertaking and unadulterated passion - towards a way of life, a woman, friends, drugs, people in need, mankind at large, adventure, a city/ country - with the perfect combination of fiction and fact. It is hard to tell the two apart in this book. It took me about a week to finish this book ( it doubled as a pillow most times) and I almost felt sorry when I was done reading it. One can't help but want more of this stuff. Leaves you with a sense of new perspective and an intimate glance at India and the way things work within the country. Also, the forces that run the city (and country)- currency, bribery, drugs, prostitution, poverty, exploitation, police - is explained very well, in detail but at no point of time do they overwhelm the main story. The spirit of Mumbaikars is rendered beautifully and the places and incidents are described in such detail that you can almost see yourself there with the mafia gang, at Leopold's or by the Haji Ali mosque.. the characters do not seem like strangers after just a few chapters, and at many times I was able to identify myself with some or the other character in the book. Totally engrossing, riveting, and highly recommended.

The story of a robber turned fugitive and an international criminal, right from the days of his incarceration at Australia to the battles he fought at the harsh landscapes of Afghanistan along with the rich description of the Mumbai underworld and his connection with it. It throws light on the inhuman things that take place in prisons. It shows how even a stone-hearted man can change provided the right experiences and circumstances circumvent his journey. A terrific novel blessed by an amazing concoction of events to propel it to the league of the legendary.
