“Once upon a time, in small-town India, there lived two intelligent boys. One wanted to use his intelligence to make money. One wanted to use his intelligence to create a revolution. The problem was, they both loved the same girl.”
Thus begins the synopsis on the back cover of the novel. Halfway through the novel, the reader will no doubt agree “they both loved the same girl” was indeed the problem.
Set in the backdrop of Varanasi, the heartland of India, the story traces the life of the three friends as they struggle to achieve success and love. Revolution 2020 is primarily a love triangle revolving around Gopal – the protagonist, Aarti – the love of his life, and Raghav – their friend and Gopals competitor (mostly) in love, and in success. Gopal, born in a poor family, finds it rather hard to meet his ill fathers expectations of high scores in the engineering stream. Raghav, on the other hand, is an exceptionally intelligent student who has no difficulty in achieving top grades. Aarti, the daughter of a high profile minister, aspires to be an airhostess. Entering adult life, Gopal wants to use his intelligence to make money, while Raghav wants to use his intelligence to uproot corruption and start a peoples revolution in the country. Aarti, however, becomes a mere pawn swinging between the loves of two boys, not very unlike the “war-spoils” that ancient Greek and Roman warriors fought over. The narration embodies two strong points. One: Bhagats inclusion of small town stories into his otherwise metropolitan yarn. Two: a different take on Varanasi – Varanasi as a haunt of the dead, corrupt, and ambitious, rather than Varanasi as the abode of salvation, purification, and religion. The unimaginative drama undoubtedly offers a break from hectic schedules, and definitely keeps the reader hooked with the vivid descriptions of the holy heartland of India, through a localites eyes.
